Everyone is kicking up their heels today! The cattle celebrate the weather just like us. It was actually 5 degrees here, the snow is melting fast. Not sure if we are going to have a white Christmas.

Last Friday was tourney day, where every club and class sent two members to dance for them, and two of those dancers were crowned as tourney king and queen. Both king and queen were members of FFA; tourney king was Benny Dailey, who danced for FFA to Fishing in the Dark with Joe Brookins, and tourney queen was Alyssa Fisher, our FFA Sentinel! When you see them make sure to tell them congratulations! FFA also won first place in the wreath contest!

NEW Cooperative held their Hams for Hunger event on Tuesday, December 11, 2018! The partnership with Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc., help from NEW Cooperative employees and Fort Dodge Fire Rescue, 1,200 hams were handed out to residents of Webster County. Thank you to everyone that helped make this event a success! Along with last nights event, NEW Coopeative will be delivering hams to food pantries in our trade territory this week!

This chunk a munk is not quite three months old and the smallest "runt" of the batch. We have been very pleased with the rate of gain we are seeing in this litter! We have focused on weekly enrichment adding different "toys" each week. Why? Couple of reasons. One: pigs eat after every change in activity. So if you keep them busy they will visit the feeder more often and more visits to the feeder mean they are turning feed into pork quicker! And reason number two: A happy pig doesn't plot escapes. If we keep them active and engaged they are busy enjoying themselves and not thinking about ways to get out of their area to cause trouble on the farm. This week it was simple cardboard boxes. Just like a kiddo, they hide in them, tear them apart, play keep away, toss them around and really have enjoyed themselves. It's little things like this that can make all the difference. Happy pigs just make better pork! And we can feel better knowing we've given them the best life we possibly can. I love bulls – I really don't know why – but their athleticism, muscle, and build has always fascinated me. We get our bulls from JC Heiken Angus & Sons – we also buy some semen from their bulls for our AI program. "What's it like dairy farming in New Mexico?!" – Response ⤴️ just causal sustained winds of 50 mph with gusts of 60 mph. Literal walls of tumbleweeds. But besides that it's sunny and 70°! ?
