I have been doing chores, (no, not like take the trash out chores) I mean feeding the animal chores, since I was 2 years old. My dad had a toolbox on pickup seat for me, so I could see. He would move it to the driver’s seat, put the pickup in 1st gear, then would jump out and climb on the back of the pickup. He would feed hay and cake while I tended to the wheel. I can remember feeding in blizzards, in the rain, in the fog, in the sun, in every kind of weather that Wyoming threw at our place. I can still hear dad saying, "Naomi, ready to go feed?" I absolutely loved feeding our cattle and doing all the other animals chores. It was done everyday. Then one day, dad thought I was big enough to feed by myself, I think I was about 8. My feet hardy touched the floor, but I would make the feeding pickup go. I loved feeding even more. My list of chores continued into high school. I had to milk the goats every morning and night, some days it was in the dark. I won't lie some days I cursed, some days I cried, some days I went to school smelling like a barn yard, but it didn't kill me. You see, doing the chores didn't stop when I moved out of mom and dads. The chore list just became different. But….. Doing the chores really made me who I am today. As I was helping with the chores yesterday, I thought of all the numb, cold fingers and toes that I have gotten while doing chores. I thought of all the late nights that I have dragged my sleepy head to the corrals to feed, and I thought of all the life lessons that I was taught doing chores: Life and death. Responsibility. Self-Sufficiency and Independence. Time Management. Management Skills Strong Work Ethic The Importance of Routine and Consistency. Delayed Gratification. Value. Independence. Respect. Good stewards of the environment. The value of oneself and others. Now since I am a mom, I am passing on the chores to our kids. They may or may not realize it yet, but I know that they are learning the above. I am gong to leave with a quote that mom would sometimes tell us and a few photos that I took yesterday while doing chores: “I like hugs and I like kisses, But what I really love is help with the chores!
