This past week our farm was given the chance to participate in the Pennsylvania Farm Show in their Calving Corner program. Basically, every two days a different Pennsylvania dairy farm brings 4 mamas cows who are extremely close to their due dates, they are helped to induce labor and then the public watches in awe as a baby calf is brought into the world. People were given a first hand experience into what all goes into the birth and post postpartum process— for heifer, calf and farmer. This was their second year putting on the program and I think it’s probably one of the best things that they could continue to do. It makes us relatable, it allows for conversation and questions between farmer and consumer. And— in an age where there is so much miscommunication and misconceptions about farming, especially dairy farming—this, this is a very good thing. ? ??? Jurni and Addie were having such a good time in this picture “feeding cows”. Addie actually would walk right up to the cows with no fear and try to hand feed them and Jurni would just look at her like “bad idea girlfriend”. ? Yesterday I alluded to our hectic winter this year… And while I can’t blame it ALL on the weather, I can blame most of it on her. ? We have had more snow, sickness, equipment troubles and injuries than ever before. Like each category has been record breaking, so put it all together and you can imagine where we’re at. ❄️ I feel like maybe we are like those people in the south who can’t drive in less than an inch of snow because we are just not used to this much winter weather! How do you northerners do it? ☃️ One difference I know is that our ground isn’t frozen, so we are dealing with mud every ?? single ?? day ??. Deep, deep mud at this point. It’s super fun. ? But I’ve said for years that the one thing that makes a good farmer is not education or experienced, but perseverance and grit. We WILL survive this winter, God willing, and we will be grateful for every day we get to do what we love, even the rough ones. ?? How has the weather been where you live?
