For #transformationtuesday of #nationalagweek let's talk about agriculture in Montana.⠀ ⠀ Agriculture has been one of the largest industries in the state since we became a state. Agriculture has been our #1 industry for decades (it replaced mining sometime in the early 20th century).⠀ ⠀ But while agriculture has always been present — it has transformed an incredible amount in recent years.⠀ ⠀ We have seen parts of our industry explode with increased production and demand.⠀ ⠀ We have become the #1 producer of lentils and garbanzo beans. We're near the top in production of edible dry peas, winter peas and flaxseed.⠀ ⠀ We have the largest acreage of industrial hemp in the nation.⠀ ⠀ We are also the #2 producer of malt barley.⠀ ⠀ We have seen our wheat production bounce between #3 and #4 in the nation (we trade places with Washington).⠀ ⠀ Safflower, sunflowers, and canola are also increasing in acreage.⠀ ⠀ The increase in diversity has created increased economic opportunities as our supply chains have grown and expanded. It's also provided increased diversity on our farms.
