Paying it forward, building community, giving from the heart – all through the gift of potatoes! . . Two weeks ago my amazing neighbours organized their 2nd Community Potato Give-Away. The impact of sharing their bountiful crop was powerful. . . In just under 5 hours 35,000 lbs of potatoes made their way to a multitude of homes across our community. Stories were shared and meaningful connections were made. Link to full story in bio. . . I interviewed my neighbours afterwards, believing the story was worthwhile sharing with our urban counterparts. However, the city newspaper I sent the article to said they didn't think their readership would be interested, that it would be best suited to people in the local area. This paper has published my work on different topics before, so perhaps I didn't pitch the story strongly enough or it wasn't worthwhile without some sort of controversy. . . But now I'm wondering, is social media the only way to share our feel-good farm to food stories? As farmers we are encouraged to share our stories so what is best way to do so? . . For those of you from cities, would you be interested in seeing human interest pieces like this in your local papers? I'm truly interested in your thoughts. Please feel free to comment below. Thank you! ? . . . #potatoes #spuds #sharing #giving #payitforward #differencemakers #community #communitygiveaway #abundance #foodwaste #farmtofood #farmtotable #farmimg #agriculture #agvocate #agproud #agdaily #agmorethanever #westcndag #mymanitoba #portagelaprairie #portageonpurpose #canada150

Being judgemental is easy! We had the opportunity to host a group of leaders in our county from all different backgrounds at our pig farm! I take every opportunity to educate people about our farm because I am pretty sure that if I didn't live this life everyday, I would be one of THOSE people. We all know them, because they exist no matter what profession you have. If you're a teacher you have it easy, because you get three months off every summer. If you are a doctor, you must be a millionaire. If you are a farmer, you are probably trying to kill everyone with your gmos, antibiotics, and pesticides. If you are a stay at home mom, you do nothing all day. Preconceived notions. Why are we so willing to believe what we don't know or understand? So when we give these tours I am always a little on edge because people usually come in with certain ideas about our hog barn. I was pleasantly surprised at everyone's kindness and willingness to learn. At the end of the tour, three women came up to me and said, "We have seen horrible pictures on Facebook and we are really surprised at this place. The pigs have a lot of room to walk around and they are clean". Hopefully we beat up some misconceptions with this tour!
