We had a busy night tagging five new baby calves this evening! We go out and check the whole herd every couple hours during these busy weeks of fall calving season – when we see a cow or heifer (first time mom) off by herself it usually means she's in labor or has a new babe on the ground! We check with binoculars from a ways away to be sure it's new and check the mommas ear tag number. Then Maisie gets a new yellow ear tag ready for the calf (so we can identify it to the mom) and Tess helps get the vitamin/selenium shot (soil in northern CA is deficient in selenium) and Brian drives up quietly and jumps out to catch the calf and quickly tag and administer the shot and check to see if it's a girl (heifer) or boy (bull calf). Usually it goes smoothly and sometimes it's a rodeo and once in awhile the momma cow gets mad and head butts him, but he's careful and thoughtful about it and usually goes off without a hitch! It's important to do both of these things within a few hours of birth because those little calves get active and we always want to know the pairs in case anything goes awry. We have 68 healthy calves on the ground now (in less than three weeks) and are almost half way through. Only one stillborn and no bottle babies yet so we are feeling good but we know better than to get ahead of ourselves or count those calves before they've "hatched"! Still a ways to go and we are thankful for every easy birth and healthy calf as they come. ??♥️ #calvingseason #teamwork #eveningchores #fallcalving #healthycalves #taggingtime #familychores #fivemarysfarms
