Published:

A Penalosa, Kansas man died Monday night after a tragic farming accident involving a skid steer.

According to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Bruce Smith, 34, was working with another individual on setting T-posts into the ground with the skid steer. While setting the first post, Smith was standing slightly underneath the bucket holding onto the T-post and also using a tape measure to measure how much was going into the ground as the other man operated the skid steer. At some point while setting the post, the bucket separated from the skid steer and hit Smith in the head before coming to rest on his lower extremities.

When the Reno County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived on scene at 10:50 p.m., they found Smith lying on the ground and the other male performing CPR. After over 30 minutes of life saving efforts by the deputy and the Reno County EMS, Smith was declared dead. His death has been ruled a complete accident.
