All-American Sheep Day adds Sheep Teepee event

· January 20, 2017

The Black Hills Stock Show recently announced the line-up for this year’s All-American Sheep Day, with a new event called Sheep Teepee. In addition to the North American Sheep Dog Trials, the National Sheep Shearing Competition, and Mutton Bustin’, the Feb. 2 sheep industry show will feature sheep teepeeing.

So what’s involved in a sheep teepee event? Two-person teams wrestle a sheep, secure the animal, and place a handmade teepee over it. Time is declared when teams cross the finish line. Apparently the event is quite popular at the Newell, South Dakota Ranch Rodeo. According to their Facebook post, the Sheep TeePee event is representative of what a rancher might have to do if he finds a sheep giving birth or injured on the open range. It would be best to protect the sheep by getting her into a shelter of some kind, in this case a teepee, before doctoring. Here’s a little clip from the Newell Ranch Rodeo.
