Mutton Bustin’

Meet the Mutton Busters!

· August 11, 2016

Hold on tight — this is going to be one wild ride!

Mutton Bustin’, a new CarbonTV original series, looks at the junior rodeo event straight from the riders’ eyes.

Set at the Riata Roundup Rodeo in Lampasas, Texas, see kids get kicked off sheep and who can hang on for six seconds. The kiddie cowboys range in age from 4 to 7, and all must weight less than 60 pounds.

Their families encourage them to enter to gear up and ride to win the coveted Mutton Bustin’ championship buckle and cash prizes. Many young kids ride sheep to familiarize themselves with being around cattle and the competition, before moving up through the ranks to bucking ponies, mini broncs, and, ultimately, bull riding.

“Some are one- or two-timers, others hit the ground and bounce up and ready to do it again. Mutton Bustin’ to me is key in the rodeo,” said Mike McCorkle, ex-bull rider and a member of the Lampasas Chamber of Commerce.

This rodeo event is part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
