Midwest groceries to get first GMO apples

· January 11, 2017

GMO apples will make their debut in select Midwest grocery stores next month. Arctic brand sliced and packaged Golden Delicious, produced by Okanagan Specialty Fruits will be in 10 stores this February and March.

The Arctic Apple was approved in 2015 for commercial use by the EPA, USDA, and FDA. By simply “turning off” the genes that cause the browning, Okanagan Specialty Fruits was able to create an apple that keeps its color. As the Farmer’s Daughter USA points out, aside from being consumer-friendly, the Arctic Apple may signal a switch in how use of the technology is being perceived.
