Some more new layers!! And my first heavy bloom 2nd gen olive egger (top egg)?. I get asked a lot how a chicken lays colored eggs – it's actually in their genetics. They are born to lay a certain color – and although shades can vary in the laying season they lay that color for life. So, in this case, I had an Easter egger that was laying green eggs and was paired with a Maran roo (who has a dark brown egg gene) and you get a darker green/sage colored egg from their offspring! I know yesterday was #nationaldogday but this dog is the best farm dog this girl could ever ask for. ❊ ❊ This is Bella she’s a little over 2 years old. I got her when she was 8 weeks old. Shes a cowboy corgi which is a mix between a heeler (hence the spots) and a corgi (hence the short legs). She’s been the best pal ever since…well…sometimes lol. Sometimes she can be a handful cause she has a personality of a heeler but I think I rather have an outgoing dog than a lazy mutt.? Yes this means she’s not a very good lap dog. She can’t sit still longer than 2 seconds!? I started asking myself lots of questions after finding this old dairy barn. First of all, you need to understand that it rests on a very narrow tract of land between the highway and the base of the bluffs along the Mississippi River in southwestern Wisconsin. So, where are the tillable acres and pasture areas for this farm? They have to be up on the ridges above the bluffs. In that case, think about the daily journeys the cows must have made every day to come down to the barn for milking. The hilly, steep terrain probably made for a slow and maybe even trecherous journey. How far out of the way did the farmer have to go with tractors and other machinery to work in the fields up on top of the bluffs? I'm sure the farmhouse was nearby this barn, but has since been torn down, as there's no evidence of a house anymore. One of the only advantages of establising the barn location at the foot of the bluffs would be for milk pick-up by the creamery or dairy plant. This is such a beautiful barn, even in its disarray of falling apart. The hay mow door is impressive and adds a lot of character to the iconic look along with lonely cupola and low profile dormers on its roof. When l find a barn like this one, l dream of having access to a time machine so l can experience what life was like during the height of its usefulness. What was daily life all about on this farm along the mighty Mississippi? We can only imagine for now.
