It’s a beautiful snowy morning on the farm today. . Something I’ll be talking about more in the new book is “finding your angle”. Not just in terms of products and services, but also just literally finding the best photographic angles on your farm or in your garden. . In my first year, a lot of people wanted to come and see my farm, and when they arrived there was a sense of “ummm… is this it?”. Yep that was it! My farm was abandoned for 30 years before I bought it. That first year was a mess! The photos I posted were angled very carefully to show only the prettiest nooks and cutest crannies. The rest of it was a categorical shit box. . It’s come a long way in the short time I’ve been here, and there’s still a long way to go in terms of establishing gardens and trees. But the longer I’m here, the more plentiful my pretty angles become. . A shed, a barn, a view of the horizon… when you’re just starting, you’re best “angle” can simply be one spot. Get low so the photo shows foreground and background, keep the horizon level, play with focus, and make the light work for you. And don’t be afraid of your photo editing settings on your phone or computer! Filters are fun but can be very heavy handed, sometimes all you need is a gentle bump and boom, you’ve got a gorgeous shot of your farm! . My favourite accounts who utilize their best angles to stunning effect are @mccormickcharlie and @countrycutflowers. Their photos embody their gardens’ unique geographical identities through thoughtful, skilled composition. So so beautiful ???. . I’m aiming to have the new book, “DON’T PANIC; An Expanded Business Guide to Cut Flower Farming”, available within the next few months. Details will be shared online and via my newsletter as soon as it’s ready! — #flowerfarm #winterfarm #albertafarm #canadianfarm #wintergarden #findyourangle #farmphotography
