We are gathering pairs off pasture today and hauling them to the home place for weaning. We will sort the cows from the calves tomorrow, vaccinate and weigh the calves, and place them in a pen. The cows will be moved to a pasture right next to the calves. This is called "fence line" weaning. It is less stressful for the calves and allows them to be close without anyone being able to nurse. . . . The calves at this age are only nursing a couple times a day, I would say most are morning and night. We move all our pairs close to home the day before so we can gather all pairs and sort in a short amount of time. We will work quickly and quietly tomorrow to not stress the calves. Ever wonder what heat does to 650,000 bushell of rotting, flood-soaked soybeans? It causes them to spontaneously combust. This pile, located on the edge of my hometown of Rock Port, Missouri, has been burning for nearly 2 months, despite mother nature's attempts to put it out. It gets so hot it makes its own oil, then the oil burns, filling the sky with black smoke. The devastation caused by the flood is still very prevalent in NW Missouri.
