Research from a 75-year Harvard study examined childhood psychosocial variables and biological processes that could predict health and well-being later in life. You know what they found? Chores were the best predictor of which kids were more likely to become happy, healthy, independent adults. ⁣ ⁣ The thing about farm kids is: it’s not just about the chores. Yes they have chores, but it’s also about learning that, despite their small grasp of the world, they are not the most important thing at all times. ⁣ ⁣ Sick animals, trapped animals, predatory threats, animals in labor…these are things that our kids know will always take precedence over their tantrums/whining/outlandish requests. ⁣ ⁣ Do I feel bad when our kids ask for something and I say yes, I can do that, only to turn around and tell them, wait-a-second I have to help this animal? ⁣ ⁣ A little bit. ⁣ ⁣ But then I remember, they need to be told no. They need to learn to wait. And, yes, they need to be bored. ⁣ ⁣ The ultimate goal is to raise good humans. Humans who are content with their space in this world and humans who give more than they take. ⁣ ⁣ Hopefully no one will ever say to them, you didn’t have chores as a kid, and it shows. ⁣ ⁣ ? @farmher1⁣ ⁣ #farmkids #workingfarm #chores #goatdairy #barnhelp #ramblingsfromthegoatbarn #homesteading #raisethemstrong #freerangekids #strongkids #growyourown #childhoodunplugged
