Our work days usually look a lot like this at the end of the day. We’re up before the sun and usually putting the horses up right before the sun goes down, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. The day actually goes by pretty quickly when you’re constantly marking calves and have a steady flow going. However, naps in the bed of the truck are not unusual. ? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is not a requirement to brand your cattle in Texas (correct me if I’m wrong), which was SHOCKING to me coming from New Mexico. Although, we do brand every now and then jus to keep things straight. It is also not a requirement to have a unique brand in the state of Texas as a whole, just by county. In New Mexico, everyone must have a different brand throughout the state. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are your state’s branding requirements? i am always so impressed by a mother’s natural instinct. the way they automatically know how to clean their calf, push them along and protect them. it’s the mushy-gushy side coming out in me, but honestly, i love witnessing this process. and obviously there’s that 1% of momma cows that don’t get these instincts naturally cause there always has to be a pain in the chain somewhere ??‍♀️

It’s soon time to starting thinking about goats and buying two for the girls. Ava will train hers and show it at the local fair this summer and Charlotte will start learning the responsibilities of caring for one. We are still very green in the world of goats— our first year was a success thanks to the @melissa__burk family and then we had a heartbreaking season two years ago where two passed after catching pneumonia.
