A common thing we hear from others outside of the farming community is "Why do you separate the mothers from their babies at birth?" 🐄🌿 Firstly, they are not separated immediately– they are given time to clean their calf and help to nudge it along so it helps find it's feet for the first time. This photo is a depiction of one of those times. After this, the mother is then taken to be milked for her colostrum and two full bottles are then fed to the calf to ensure it gets every single drop of it's mothers liquid gold. 🐄✨ But, there are times — one we actually witnessed first hand a month ago where it is in the best interest of the mother and the calf if they are separated immediately. 🐄 On this particular day, a first-time heifer found herself in labor on an extremely warm day. As time passed she was having an increasingly hard time giving birth, a front leg of the calf was tucked behind and she wasn't coming out in the correct position. With every contraction, the cow was becoming more stressed. Thankfully one of our very skilled employees was able to reposition the calf and help the mom deliver. By this point, the momma was in a very aggressive state of mind (if you've ever given birth before you may be able to understand a little bit about how she was feeling after a stressful birth) she proceeded to try and throw the calf against the wall with her nose and step on it. Thanks again to the fast acting and skilled employee, he quickly separated them so that no harm could be done. This is a perfect example of why it can be extremely crucial to separate mom from baby right away. The safety of mom, calf, and others around them is most important. Thankfully the other mommas in the pen next to this newborn started to clean and nudge it with their noses through the gate. These gentle giants are preceptive and intelligent animals and while they can be extremely kind at the end of the day they are animals and they can also have their moments. Care, compassion and vigilance is a top priority in the maternity pen. #knowyourfarmer #dairygood #agdaily #goodnessthatmatters #choosepadairy #undeniablydairy
