Review: Milwaukee Tool channeling the farm lifestyle

Published:

It’s not just about the tools. Milwaukee Tool hasn’t forgotten that comfort and convenience are integral parts of getting the job done safely and efficiently around the farm. Staying warm and dry, and also providing products that make a job site friendlier are concepts that have not been overlooked by this innovative tool company.

Jackets and shirts

Working outdoors in hot, cold and damp conditions always presents challenges in terms of whether you’re wearing enough, or too much, and staying dry and comfortable. Of course, durability is another major consideration. Milwaukee has been diligently trying to solve these problems for several years now. They’ve come up with several new garments to address harsh working conditions, including the GRIDIRON Traditional Jacket and Hooded Jacket (available in August), and the WORKSKIN Mid-Weight Base Layer (available in August) and WORKSKIN Light Weight Performance Shirt (now available). The jackets provide excellent insulation without impeding movement, as well as being constructed with a highly durable ripstop polyester fabric shell, which is significantly tougher and lighter than cotton duck. Unlike some of the company’s earlier offerings, these jacket are not heated. The WORKSKIN Mid-Weight Base Layer has zones on the upper back and under the arms that help keep you dry by allowing sweat to quickly evaporate and it’s made of an abrasion-resistant fabric blend. For hot weather, the WORKSKIN Light Weight Performance Shirt features a fabric that accelerates drying as well as providing UV protection.

Lighting

You need light to work, and sometimes you need a lot of it. Milwaukee has several lighting solutions with increased luminescence, battery life, and ruggedness that are well suited for many challenging work environments. The USB Rechargeable Flashlight (available in September) has a brilliant 700-lumen output in addition to being small enough to stow in your pocket and it’s also waterproof and dust-proof. For a hands-free lighting solution, the USB Rechargeable Hard Hat Light (available in September) is powered by REDLITHIUM and it features a slip-resistant headband and an adjustable light angle. (An alkaline battery head lamp will be available at a later date.) If you’re working under the hood or just need a lot of light for a large work area, such as over a workbench, the M12 LED Underhood Light produces 1350 lumens. It’s currently available as a kit ($250) or the light only ($200) and runs on Milwaukee’s 12-volt battery system.

Coolers

Keeping your cool on the job often means keeping a few cool beverages on hand, and the Milwaukee Jobsite Cooler (available in October) is the ideal place to stow them. It’s as tough and innovative as any other Milwaukee-branded product, with features that include a ballistic-material base, metal zippers, a leak-proof liner and double insulation to keep food and beverages cool for up to 24 hours.
