I’m a rancher and raise cattle. But I’m also a grass rancher. Like nearly all cattle, our cows and calves spend most of their lives grazing on grass pastures. Lots and lots of green grass is our goal – it keeps our livestock fed and is much more nutritionally valuable than hay. Green grass = lots of beef! To maintain our pastures, we rotate our cows to a new lot once they have grazed the grass to within 4-5 inches of the ground. This ensures the grass can regrow and not get stunted. We also work really hard to control weeds through planned burns and herbicides in the fall and late winter. Right now our grass is tush-high on our 17-month old little cowgirl. Would I like to have had it shoulder-high before we turned the cows out? Of course – but we had a dry winter and so far a relatively dry spring so we are praying for rain. Good management paired with advantageous weather = happy ranchers! • • • #ksbeefmonth #beefmonth #behindthebeef #ranchlife #grassfarmers #farmher #thegoodlife #drover #agproud #cowsofinstagram #toddler #raisedright
