Loose bovine shuts down New Jersey subway headed to N.Y.

Published:

New Jersey residents are used to delays in their morning commute. However, a bull (or steer?) on the subway tracks caused an unusual stir after straying into Newark Penn Station on Thursday.

According to the New Jersey Transit, the brown, horned bull stood on the tracks, prompting police response while holding up train traffic between New York and New Jersey for almost an hour.

The bull was eventually found three miles from the station, said the Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage. Police eventually cornered the animal into a fenced lot away from the station.

The bull’s ownership and why it was estray remain unclear, but wandering livestock do happen occasionally — even in Newark.

No injuries were reported, and he was sent to a local animal sanctuary.
