Bayer donates $500K to support Maui after devastating fires

Published:

Devastating wildfires sweeping through Hawaii have flattened towns, killing almost 100 people (and the death toll continues to rise), and impacting Maui’s leading industries: tourism and agriculture.

In the aftermath, Bayer is providing immediate relief and sustainable support for recovering and rebuilding with donations and healthcare products.

Bayer’s relationship with Maui dates back more than 50 years, and the company will contribute $500,000 to relief efforts on the island — a cash donation of $250,000 alongside a donation of healthcare products valued at $250,000.

This donation underscores Bayer’s dedication to addressing the crucial needs of the community and the company’s Crop Science employees at our farms on Maui during this unimaginable time. It focuses on the critical areas of supporting relief efforts, increasing access to food for those displaced, continuously assessing the community’s needs, and contributing to local organizations as additional requirements emerge.

Of the cash donation, $150,000 will be directed to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong program, which is vital in coordinating resources for recovery efforts. An additional $50,000 will be contributed to the Maui Food Bank, supporting their mission to provide relief and distribute food through community partners to assist those in need. Recognizing the evolving nature of the situation, Bayer will also provide $50,000 in future contributions to local organizations to help support the ongoing efforts as needs emerge.

To supplement donations made to local organizations, Bayer will donate the $250,000 worth of healthcare supplies to Direct Relief, an organization working closely with 19 Hawaii healthcare partners to deliver immediate medical aid to those in need on the ground. The donation includes 4,000 items specifically requested by Direct Relief, such as Bayer Aspirin, Aleve, Claritin, and an antibiotic, addressing critical healthcare requirements.

In addition to these contributions, Bayer’s Maui, Molokai, and Oahu employees have demonstrated remarkable compassion by donating more than 3,000 pounds of essential supplies, including food, water, toiletries, towels, baby items, sleeping bags, household necessities, and clothing. Many Bayer employees have also dedicated their time to contributing to the relief efforts by volunteering to serve meals and sorting donations, showcasing a genuine commitment to assisting their fellow community members.

Furthermore, colleagues across Bayer have united to show their support for Maui through monetary donations made to the Bayer Fund matching program. This collective effort underscores Bayer’s commitment to standing alongside the Maui community during these trying times.

“We are grateful to be a part of the Maui community and are fully committed to providing support during this unprecedented time,” stated Alan Takemoto, Government Affairs Lead, Bayer Hawaii. “Our pledge is to help offer not only immediate relief but also to contribute to the sustained recovery and revitalization of Maui.”
