Meat giant JBS unveils new cultivated protein research center

Published:

JBS, one of “The Big Four” meat conglomerates, is adding a new number to their routine, adding lab-grown meat to the menu with plans to build the “JBS Biotech Innovation Centre” in Brazil.

The ambitious cultivated protein research and development project further solidifies JBS’s position in this growing sector.

The JBS Biotech Innovation Centre will be a modern research facility in Brazil dedicated exclusively to food biotechnology. It reflects JBS’s commitment to driving advancements in the cultivated protein sector and providing consumers with innovative, high-quality products.

The center will include state-of-the-art laboratories with the latest technology to support researchers’ cultivated protein studies. A pilot plant will also allow for testing and refining new ideas before moving to large-scale production. Plans for constructing a commercial plant within the facility are also in place, demonstrating JBS’s intent to translate research into real-world products.

JBS’s investment in this project is substantial, with an initial allocation of $22 million and plans for an additional $40 million, showcasing its commitment to advancing the field.

The JBS Biotech Innovation Centre is expected to open in late 2024 and will be staffed with a team of 25 post-doctoral researchers specializing in cultivated protein science. These researchers will work to unravel the complexities of food biotechnology and drive innovations in protein production.

According to multiple news sources, Jerson Nascimento Jr., JBS Global Supply and Innovation Director, expressed his excitement for the project, stating, “The JBS Biotech Innovation Centre reinforces our commitment to the cultivated protein sector and our dedication to offering innovative, high-quality products to consumers.”

Beyond Brazil, JBS is also involved in cultivated protein research through its ownership stake in Biotech Foods, a Spanish company specializing in cultured meat production.

The announcement adds to JBS’ announcement earlier this year to begin building a lab-grown beef factory in Spain.
