Federal grazing lands have heavy implications for economy

Federal grazing has long been an issue of contention with some groups calling for the removal of livestock from public grazing lands. Yet, livestock grazing still takes place on about 250 million acres of public lands, most of those are located in the Western United States. During many seasons of the year, federal grazing is a major source of forage for ranches in the areas, and support for local economies.

NCBA’s National Anthem Contest winner: Franki Moscato

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has chosen the winner of the National Anthem Contest — Franki Moscato of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. As the winner of the 10th annual National Anthem Contest, sponsored by Norbrook, Moscato will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2023 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show in New Orleans. Attendees will hear her during the Opening General Session as well as at the Friday night “Party Gras” concert.

White House sets new food and ag security focus

Last week, the National Security Memorandum to Strengthen the Security and Resilience of U.S. Food and Agriculture was signed. This new memorandum allows the federal government to identify threats facing domestic supply and enhance national preparedness and response.

Nominations open for 2023 environmental stewardship awards

Applications are being accepted until March 10, 2023, for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association 2023 Environmental Stewardship Award. Established in 1991, the Environmental Stewardship Award Program annually recognizes outstanding stewardship practices and conservation achievements of cattle producers across the nation.

Utah ranch recognized nationally for environmental stewardship

The NCBA awarded Utah ranch JY Ferry & Son, Inc. with the National Environmental Stewardship Award at NCBA’s annual summer business meeting this year. Honored for outstanding environmental stewardship, the Ferry family has a 100-year history of conservation tactics that focus on water conservation, energy, and protecting natural resources. John Ferry is a fourth-generation rancher on his family operation who raises corn, silage, and other cash crops.
